A fuel leak around at the fuel pump flange. Leaking around the support ring installed by the previous remedy. I contacted a dealer several times, but they have been unable to remedy due to no parts since April 2021. I also contacted [email protected] and they said "at this time the remedy for the recall: 20V-471 is available; however, the parts are on backorder for all models. We currently don't have an eta we can provide." BMW has failed to prepare sufficient replacement parts and they are unable to remedy for 20V-471 in a timely manner.

FUEL GAUGE STOPPED RESPONDING, LEADING TO RUNNING OUT OF FUEL WHILE MOVING. THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE ON MANY BIKE MODELS FROM BMW FROM 2005-2013.THE FUEL LEVEL MEASURING STRIP IN THE FUEL TANK WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER04. THIS IS AN UNSAFE CONDITION SINCE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER FROM RUNNING OUT OF FUEL CAN BE QUITE DANGEROUS ON A MOTORCYCLE

ABS PUMP FAILED AFTER ~ 21,000 MILES LEAVING ME WITHOUT ANY ABS. TRIED TO COME TO A STOP ON A HIGHWAY ON-RAMP AND LOCKED THE REAR TIRE UP AND SKIDDED FOR ~ 25 FT BEFORE STOPPING. DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW A KEY PIECE OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT CAN FAIL WITH SUCH LOW MILES AND THERE IS NO RECALL OR GOODWILL ON BMW'S PART TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART. *TR

AT THAT LOW MILEAGE A FEW MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE OF THE MOTORCYCLE I WAS ALERTED TO "BRAKE FAILURE" LAMP ON INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. I WAS TOLD BY DEALER (WHO WAS IN NEW JERSEY - BIKE WAS SHIPPED TO CHICAGO) THAT THIS FAULT WOULD PROBABLY DISAPPEAR AFTER SOME MORE USE OF BIKE. I WAS ASSURED THAT BRAKE FUNCTIONS WERE NOT AFFECTED. THE FAULT CODE SUPPLIED BY A LOCAL DEALER WAS AT 232 MILES AND IT WAS 005 DFO PUMP MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY. I HAD THE BIKE STORED FOR SEVERAL YEARS AFTER THAT AND IT NOW HAS LESS THAN 400 MILES ON IT. THE FAULT IS STILL THERE AND I AM TOLD THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ABS MODULE ($2000 PLUS FOR THE PART AND $500 FOR THE LABOR) THE LATEST FAULT CODE READING AT 288 MILES WAS "009309 KOMBI UNDER TENSION" DUE TO THE LAPSE OF TIME SINCE PURCHASE I UNDERSTAND BMW'S HESITANCY OF WARRANTY REPAIR, HOWEVER AFTER CONVERSING WITH OTHER BMW R1200RT OWNERS OF BIKES OF 2007-2012 VINTAGE, I SEE THAT VIRTUALLY ALL R1200RT BIKES WERE AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM. I AM TOLD, THAT THE MAIN REASON FOR THIS INTERNAL ABS MODULE FAULT IS THE FACT THAT THE BRUSHES INSIDE THE PUMP MOTOR DO NOT HAVE STRONG ENOUGH SPRINGS PUSHING THEM AGAINST THE PUMP ROTOR. THIS CAUSES PITTING ON THE ROTOR, ETC. THIS CLEARLY IS A MANUFACTURER'S FLAW AND SINCE ABS BRAKES ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE RIDING SAFETY OF THIS BIKE, IT IS DEFINITELY A CAUSE OF CONCERN. *TR

I WAS RIDING MY MOTORCYCLE ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN I NOTICED THE SMELL OF GASOLINE. UPON ARRIVAL HOME I DETERMINED THAT PRESSURIZED FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL PUMP OUTLET CONNECTION, SPECIFICALLY THE THREADED BOSS INTO WHICH THE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTING SCREWS. WHEN I TURNED ON THE IGNITION AND ENERGIZED THE FUEL PUMP, GASOLINE RAN OUT OF THE CONNECTION AND DOWN ONTO THE ENGINE. A SEARCH OF THE INTERNET REVEALED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS FUEL PUMP WHICH IS USED ON NUMEROUS MODELS OF BMW MOTORCYCLES. FURTHER, A NEW REPLACEMENT PUMP NOW HAS A METAL REINFORCEMENT AROUND THE THREADED BOSS, WHICH INDICATES THAT BMW IS AWARE OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN FLAW. FUEL LEAKING ONTO A RUNNING ENGINE IS CLEARLY A FIRE HAZARD. *TR

MY MOTORCYCLE RAN OUT OF FUEL WHILE INDICATING 1/2 FULL ON THE FUEL GAUGE. I WAS ON A BUSY US HIGHWAY AND HAD TO COAST TO THE SOFT SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, WHERE THE BIKE ALMOST TIPPED OVER INTO THE TRAFFIC LANE WHEN THE KICKSTAND SUNK INTO THE SOFT GROUND. FORTUNATELY ANOTHER BIKER HAD A HOSE AND WE WERE ABLE TO SIPHON ENOUGH FUEL USING A COKE CAN FOR ME TO MAKE IT TO A GAS STATION. SINCE THAT TIME THE GAUGE HAS ALWAYS INDICATED NO LESS THAN 1/2 TANK, EVEN WHEN EMPTY. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD IN PARTICULAR FOR SOMEONE ON 2 WHEELS. A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AT LOWER SPEEDS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN THE BIKE TIPPING OVER IN THE ROADWAY, CAUSING INJURY TO ME & ENDANGERING ME AND OTHERS. SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE LEARNED THAT MANY OTHER BMW RIDERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, AND THAT BMW DENIES THE EXISTENCE OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR

FUEL CONTROL MODULE STOPPED WORKING,WHICH DISABLES THE BIKE AND IT WILL NOT RUN. REMOVED THE MODULE AND FOUND THE PC BOARD BURNED AND SHORTED, DUE TO FUEL SEEPAGE COMING FROM FUEL PUMP AND ARCING UNDER THE BOARD. THE FUEL IS COMING FROM A FUEL NIPPLE FITTING LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE MODULE. INSPECTED THE FUEL PUMP FITTING AND FOUND 4 CRACKS RADIATING FROM THE THREADED SECTION INTO THE BODY OF THE FUEL PUMP. NO REPAIR AVAILABLE FROM BMW AND THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE IS TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY WHICH LISTS FOR ALMOST 500 DOLLARS AND STILL HAS THE FLAWED NIPPLE DESIGN. CLEANED THE AREA AND MADE A REPAIR USING A 2 PART EPOXY RESIN. IT HAS BEEN FAIRLY GOOD BUT IS BEGINNING TO DETERIORATE AND BEGIN SEEPING. THE NEW FUEL PUMPS HAVE BEEN MODIFIED WITH A THICKER THREADED SECTION AND A SUPPORT COLLAR. YOU CAN SMELL FUEL AT TIMES AND THIS SYSTEM IS PRESSURIZED CREATING A VERY REAL FIRE DANGER.!! *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2007 BMW R1200RT MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE FUEL PUMP CAUSING THE FUEL TO LEAK. WHEN ROUTINE SERVICE WAS DONE ON THE VEHICLE WHEN THE MECHANIC NOTICED THE FUEL LEAK. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,077.

THE PLASTIC ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP HAS DEVELOPED CRACKS AROUND A HIGH PRESSURE OUTPUT FITTING THAT CARRIES FUEL TO THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM. IT IS POSSIBLE TO SMELL GAS FUMES AROUND THIS AREA OF THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE STAINS ON THE PUMP THAT CONFIRMS THE FUEL LEAK. THIS LEAKY FITTING IS LOCATED WITHIN TWO INCHES OF VARIOUS ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS USED FOR ENGINE MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS (FUEL LEVEL, ETC). ALL IT TAKES IS FOR A SPARK FROM THESE CONNECTORS TO IGNITE GAS FUMES FROM THE LEAKY CONNECTOR TO CAUSE A VEHICLE FIRE. THIS IS A FIRE HAZARD THAT COULD ENDANGER THE LIFE OF THE DRIVER AS WELL AS THE VEHICLE ITSELF. MOST MOTORCYCLES ARE STORED IN CLOSED GARAGES AND THERE IS THE POTENTIAL OF A FIRE, PROPERTY LOSS OR LOSS OF LIFE OR AN EXPLOSION IF A MOTORCYCLE WITH THIS DEFECT IS PARKED NEARBY A GAS WATER HEATER. *TR

NOTICED FUEL RESIDUAL ON LEFT SIDE FAIRING OF MOTORCYCLE. REMOVED FAIRING TO FIND SOURCE OF FUEL LEAK. FOUND THE OUTLET FLANGE ON THE FUEL PUMP HIGH PRESSURE OUTLET LEAKING FUEL, & CRACKED IN FOUR DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. I'M NOT SURE WHEN THESE CRACKS OCCURRED AND FUEL STARTED LEAKING. I DISCOVERED THE LEAK ONLY WHEN IT GOT BAD ENOUGH TO BLOW BACK ON THE MOTORCYCLE FAIRING. I WAS AT HOME WHEN I DISCOVERED THIS LEAK AFTER A RIDE, SO I ENTERED 0 MPH ON THIS INCIDENT INFORMATION. I RIDE THE BIKE BETWEEN 5 MPH, TO 80 MPH DEPENDING ON WHERE I'M AT. (INTERSTATE, HIGHWAY, CITY, ECT.). *TR

WHEN I PARKED AFTER A RIDE I SMELLED FUEL AND HAD SOME DRIPPING ON THE FLOOR FROM THE LH FAIRING. PULLED THE COWLING AND FOUND THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP HOUSING FULL OF FUEL. CLEANED IT UP AND PUT POWER TO IT AND FOUND THE FLANGE, BELOW THE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTING, CRACKED IN 3 PLACES. THIS AREA HAS NEVER BEEN TOUCHED SINCE BUILT. MY SHOP AND FORUM SEARCHES INDICATE THIS IS A RELATIVELY COMMON PROBLEM. THE POTENTIAL FOR FIRE WAS HIGH. *TR
